EC: Software is not patentable

I don’t know if it is something firm or something that will go through the motions of EU bureaucracy, but according to the following link, the European Commission has suggested that software is not patentable.

This, of course, is wonderful news for all those who actively campaigned and supported the freedom of software from corporate patents. As an active user of Free and Open Source Software, I applaud this decision which will apparently force the EPO (European Patent Office) to reconsider the entire mechanism through which software was patented up to now.

I can only assume that more legal battles are looming ahead, but this is definitely a great and positive first step.

I.
