Image via Wikipedia Tomorrow Tuesday June 17th, the 3rd version of Firefox will be available to the web. Firefox, the browser that was reborn from the ashes of Netscape and came to occupy a significant portion of market share (there is no doubt that Internet Explorer has the largest share) has reached a major milestone. The 3rd edition, which had been circulating in beta and release candidate versions for some time now, is better than all previous versions and packs many extras. The Mozilla Foundation, which is responsible for Firefox, has called a worldwide collective effort to download Firefox in record volumes so that it can achieve Guinness book of records status. What must we do? What will I do at least? Simply, I will go to the site of Firefox and get the latest version of Firefox for all the platforms I use. I.
It has just been reported at gullfoss, that there is a new dev build release of openoffice 3 (this would be developer snapshot build DEV300_m16). In addition to bringing us one step closer to the much expected OOo version 3, this dev build can be installed side by side to the “regular” OOo release, for someone adventurous enough to try new and exciting things. In addition, there is a 64-bit version for the people who like to run on the 64-bit way of life. Follow this link for the latest release candidate in various platforms and OSes. Enjoy, I.
To put it simply: There are not as many virii (or viruses ?) in Linux as there are in the Windows world. Any Linux user knows this and can boast freely to his/her friend who’s stuck with Windows. Add to this the availability of clamav, an excellent, open source product for anti virus protection to complement the picture. Personally, I have been using clamav for several years now (both in my x86 and amd64 boxes, and I am a very happy customer). Today, though, I read some even better news about the availability of another excellent product, AVG, for Linux boxes. The posting in howtoforge.com tells all about how to install AVG in Ubuntu if you want to try this product, too. I am pleased to report that these excellent instructions apply to older Debian-based distributions, like my 6.06 LTS ubuntu. More, you can find instructions and installation files for other distributions if you follow the link. I can now say that the deb archive, although it is for 386 boxes can be installed in amd64 boxes, successfully with the magic of the –force-architecture flag, a nifty trick which I have written about in the past and have used it [...]

Ok, as is probably widely known by now, the newly released version 2 of firefox is out. However, as usual, it is available only for 32-bit versions of linux distros. Now, following the instructions from several places and especially here at the ubuntuforums, users of amd64 boxes have installed 32-bit versions of firefox (without the need for setting up a chroot environment). I have just replicated the instructions and set up a firefox 2 for 32 bit in my amd64 box and the result is … well you see it below: Enjoy really amazing web experience! I.
Here is a quick way to place the number of the page in a different position in the header or footer of the page. Say, we want to have the page number in the footer and on the right side of the page for odd-numbered pages and on the left side of the page for even numbered pages, much like the picture above. Unlike word where you select the location of the page number in the page setup menu, here you have to follow a more indirect, yet more appropriate, way. You have to setup the proper page style. If you come not from a wysiwyg background (for example, I write extensively in LaTeX and have become accustomed to setting up my page parameters before putting a letter in the page) this should be very easy. Any way, the key is this: 0) Press F11, or select “Styles and Formatting” under the Format Menu 1) A small window pops up displaying all the available styles. The Page styles are under the fourth icon from the left on the top-left menu. 2) Select the right page style, and right click to modify it. 3) set up a style for the right [...]

In this provocative article, Steven J. Vaughan-Nichols talks about the latest gaping holes in IE6 and urges all users of Windows to either do something or take the risk of affecting their PCs. What to do is simple: First, start using Firefox, a much faster and safer web browser. Second, switch Operating Systems to something which is more security-centered, does not look like Swiss cheese with holes. He forgets to mention that users could/should ask for better service for the money they pay when buying software which has a long history of trouble, is not fixed on-time and makes computing (either for fun or business) a dangerous affair.
One of the most solid open projects is, in my opinion, the entire Mozilla family (I include mozilla, firefox, thunderbird and all the others) which can be found here. I have been a happy and satisfied user of mozilla’s suite, although lately, I have found that firefox and thunderbird cover my needs better. However, the past 48 hours I am experimenting with swiftfox, a lite version (could we say this?) of firefox. Fast, agile, doesn’t get stuck. The perception the user gets is pure firefox, but it is a faster deal than the rest. Yes, for the purists, it does not render well the acid2 test (but with the exception of Konqueror, I don’t know a browser that does). The version in the image above is the latest 1.5.0.7 for amd64 processors. It came with all the bell and whistles (thanks to automatix). That meant that I had java, and mplayer and flash, which I could not have before without having a firefox for 32 and a regular firefox for 64. Bottom line, I like it and I will keep on using it. I.
