I was out shopping at my local computer shop when I spotted this moleskine-like hardcover journal. To the uninitiated, it may look like a moleskine. After all, it has the elastic band, the bookmark ribbon, even the backpocket (as you can see from the photos). Of course, the color is off and the feel of the paper is nothing like that of a moleskine. And did I mention that lack of plastic shrinkwrap? Some more clues about its true identity appear in the back. Rachael Hale is the name and a visit to that particular site reveals a variety of pretty looking animals and other assorted journals, stationery, gifts, cards etc. Still, I went ahead and bought it as it was ridiculously cheap for around 3 euros (as compared to the 15+ euros for a regular moleskine hardcover notebook.
Several postings I have looked at recently which, of course, all revolve around some of my favorite topics: analog or digital, moleskine/filofax or pda, writing etc. We start from this article from the american chronicle on writing tools authored by Bill Webb. Perhaps, the gist of the article is this sentence: They don’t have to be expensive, but they have to be “right”, referring to the quality of his writing instruments, and of course the moleskine notebook reigns supreme here. Some more ideas are presented at hyalineskies, while others argue in favor of more traditional pen-and-paper means. The argument: it is cheap and does not need a change in batteries, it does not break and, of course, it makes other turn and give you the look. Enjoy reading, I. Powered by ScribeFire. Related posts: Writing as it was meant to be. Do we really need them? is it or is it not? blackcover contest

Well, after much abuse, my daily notebook finally broke down. As you can see from the picture, the nice little pagemarker separated from the spine. The spine was showing signs of its use, but just a slight pull of the pagemarker it was enough to separate it from the rest of the notebook. I may try and reattach it or I can go shopping for a few more moleskines (yeah…) I. Powered by ScribeFire. Related posts: moleskine pictures Moleskine-like journal New moleskine

As promised in the previous posting, here are some photos of the moleskines I use now: a pocket diary and a pocket notebook. As you can see, the diary on the left is in a much better condition than the notebook on the right. Also notice the little chip on the lower right corner of the notebook cover (which I cover with blue ink in a moment of un-creative frenzy), the start of the break on the spine (lower left corner of the notebook) and some of the junk that overflows from its pages. I actually took the little phonebook insert from the planner and stuffed it in the notebook. Here is a better picture, sort of. You can see the phonebok protruding from the back of the notebok, my blurred scribblings and post-it notes and the mandatory page-numbering in the upper right corner. After almost a year of intensive note-keeping, carrying and tossing around in pockets (I prefer the inside pocket of a jacket), it’s still functioning I. Powered by ScribeFire.
If you follow internet arguments closely, you know about big debates and fights: Emacs vs. vi, Firefox vs. Internet Explorer and so on. In a brand new wordpress blog titled black cover, the authors set out their goal as the search for the perfect little black notebook. Of course, this can only mean one thing: a moleskine notebook, the beloved fetish and daily little thing for note-taking, writing, scribbling, sketching and much, much more. The argument is that recent moleskine products seem to be of a lesser quality; spines break easily, elastic bands get loose, so the user does not get his money worth. Also, its size (the pocketbook moleskine variety) may not fit very well in the back pocket and, thus, make it difficult to carry around (although one may consider carrying it in the inside pocket of a jacket perhaps). Although, I sympathize with the poster and his struggle to find a better alternative, I have to say (and I am not a moleskine rep) that I have used moleskine notebooks for the last couple of years (used and abused is better) and they don’t seem to suffer any of the breaks and warps reported. It has lost [...]

In a thought-provoking (or maybe not so), wired mag has suggested a series of Top Tools for Creative (and Working) Writers. That’s an interesting compilation of technical and non-technical stuff for the aspiring writer(s). They are all in there: the must have’s, such as the palmtop, the notebook, the journal, the pen, the digital recorder/note-keeper, the better-writing-software and the must not have’s, such as the heavy laptop, the fancy journal, the creative writing software. Of course, moleskine journals/notebooks have the honor to be in both categories (as expected, of course). The complaint the author of the posting had was that sometimes the aspiring writer loses the perennial forest. We put more emphasis on the writing tools and forget about the art and craft of writing.
