The most recent word from the friendly folks at google is the new picasa 2.7 preview for linux. Update: This version includes things that the 2.5 version did not. My preferred ones are: better raw support, better import capabilities and picasaweb album uploads. Also noted this version (albeit a preview one) is available as a .deb file for those of us who live in the amd64 universe. In past postings from this blog, I had mentioned how I was able to install the .deb archive for the x86 architecture. It worked just fine, mind you, but it is always nice when a 64-bit version is available. My two gripes so far are these: 1) I still cannot post an image and type some text in any other language but english (the usual ALT+SHIFT combo for switching between languages does not work). 2) Picasa will upload an image and create a post in blogger only This is a recent image taken from inside my car. I have been following this IC train since it left Patras station and was waiting for it to cross the Papaflessa Street junction. In the back, you can see St. Andrew’s cathedral dome.
This blog has a couple of picasa related items which you can read again to refresh your memory and admire at the pictures. The focus of these postings was on picasa for linux and how you can set up picasa in your favorite linux flavor. Together, picasa and picasa web albums (it comes as part of your google account) offer a great combo for sharing pictures with the rest of the world or at least a part of it. It can create flash animations that you can upload and embed to your blog and website, unless your blog is hosted by wordpress.com, in which case … hasta la vista, baby. Sorry folks, you ran out of luck. Of course, there is a Flickr widget which works just fine, but it is not picasa. Strange, considering that there are several picasaweb related plugins available. The catch? You must have your blog hosted privately. Enjoy. I. Powered by ScribeFire.
On an amd64 box, no less Since picasa was made available for linux i386 distros, I was one of the many who took advantage and installed it. I also found out that picasa works wonderfully even when running in a amd64 environment. As I have outlined in an earlier posting, amd64 users could easily download the self-extracting bin installer available here and follow the well-known path to installation nirvana (the installer put picasa in /opt in my ubuntu box). Were there any glitches? No. Picasa takes some time to start and locate all the photos in the directories, so in an older machine with limited memory resources, things will be definitely slower. Personally, I am more concerned that I cannot switch to another language when I blog (the keyboard combo ALT+SHIFT does not switch languages, unfortunately in my case), but I can live with that. The photo above is from Monemvasia, off the east coast of Peloponnese, Greece. The photo was taken in mid july around 7pm. Very hot and extremely humid, despite being next to the open sea, but with a spectacular view of the old town below and the Aegean sea, all around. I. Related posts: Picasa works [...]

In proper ubuntu fashion, two pictures I took on the way back from a conference in December of 2005. The colors have already become part of my ubuntu desktop. The river in the back is the river Aoos (pronounced uh-oh-oh-s) and spelled Αώος, if you are interested. Picasa continues to work beautifully, although I sometimes have to manually insert the hyperlinks to other locations. It seems that the button does not work properly, and that happens randomly. Still, a great tool for everyone to use. I. Related posts: Picasa works on amd 64 as well!!! Monemvasia by picasa *-util is your friend new picasa for linux

A big, huge, monumental, thank you to the wonderful people at google who made picasa work for linux, too. I have been experimenting with picasa on my ubuntu box since yesterday. This morning, I am happy to say that Picasa works on my AMD64 box. Here is how I did it: 1) I downloaded the self-extracting installer which says that it is for any x86 installation. 2) After the necessary chmod 755 *.bin (sorry, I never learnt the chmod a+x stuff), you simply execute the installer and it asks if it is ok to install picasa in the directory /opt/picasa. That’s fine with me. Voila, picasa for amd64, too. IKD Update!!! Google has already made available rpm and deb files for both x32 and x64 platforms, so the above tricks is no longer necessary!!!
